Since being honored as finalists of the 2012 DML Badges Competition, CyberWise has been hard at work completing an online learning/badging platform to help adults become savvier citizens of their digital world. Today we are close to launching CyberWise Certified.

CyberWise Certified utilizes newly released Badge OS, the free plug-in to WordPress that lets us create achievements and issue shareable badges via Credly. We also use other open-access technologies, such as YouTube, iBooks Author, Issuu, WordPress, and more, to deliver our information.

Students become leaders and partners in our program as follows: Every “Quest” concludes with an “Interaction” activity that sends users to a forum to share best practices and resources, provide mutual support, and make professional connections. Our three-step learning process (“Watch”/“Read”/ “Answer”) makes use of a wide variety of digital tools in a unique and engaging way. The example we believe we set for others is that today it is possible to share extensive research and knowledge using such free digital resources.

The under served markets targeted by CyberWise Certified are those being “left behind” in the digital age — parents and educators. Recent research shows adults “admit that they are overwhelmed by technology, outsmarted by their children, and don’t have time to keep up with modern online advancements” (McAfee, 2013). We believe a fun and engaging learning system that can be accessed “whenever, wherever” can help bridge this digital divide. Ultimately this will help educators to engage in (and parents to advocate for) connected learning practices in education.
