Rebecca Guay founded SmART SCHOOL (SAS)  to meet the need for professional and technical development for freelance illustrators, to give them everything they never got in art school. SAS is a mentorship-based online course that brings a network of passionate, über-talented working professionals (artists, editors, art directors, agents and gallery owners) into the online classroom to share their knowledge in an intimate one-on-one environment. We have no syllabus or required assignments; rather, we work with each student where they are and help them create work and take steps to where they want to go.

Our students have gone on to place work in annuals like SOI LA, Spectrum, and other respected books. Some students leave with new clients after meeting one or more of our visiting Art Directors. Everyone leaves inspired.

We use conferencing software that allows all participants free access, and instructors to do demos and live drawings over student work. This allows us the flexibility to incorporate new tools and technology as necessary for our students (e.g. dropbox and webcam mobile apps for demos).

By bringing a wider network to an online forum, we allow illustrators from all over the world to participate and take steps they would not otherwise be able to take in their career.

SmART SCHOOL is open learning at it’s best. In this group environment, everyone learns from each other. With such a wide range of abilities in the student body, combined with the personally-tailored lessons, the classroom environment is simply ripe with ideas and information that will help everyone involved.
